From Japan to Arabia: Ayutthaya's Maritime Relations with Asia

University of Hawaii From Japan to Arabia is the product of a three-day workshop held in 1995, when participants were invited to focus on the city (of Ayutthaya) as one of the “major port polities in pre-modern Asia”. In the opening paragraph to his own contribution, the editor, Kenon Breazeale, expresses his view that “a book comparable to the present study could not be written about any other Asian nation”. And indeed, the evidence assembled here is so impressive that by the final pages one would be hard pressed to think of a similar case.
